How It Works
From how our candles are made to how to get the best out of every product - here's everything you need to know about Eddie & Lu.
How Eddie & Lu Candles Are Made
Every Eddie & Lu candle is hand-poured in small batches in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Here's how we make them:
1. Sourcing the Wax
We start with 100% pure coconut wax - sustainably sourced, non-GMO, and pesticide-free. Unlike many candle brands, we do not blend our wax with soy or paraffin. What you get is pure coconut wax, and nothing else. Sourcing the right wax took months of trialling to find a supplier and grade that met our standards.
2. Testing the Fragrance
Every fragrance in our range has been carefully tested to ensure it performs beautifully in coconut wax. Coconut wax has an exceptional scent throw - both when the candle is cold and when it is burning. We test fragrances extensively for balance, longevity, and how they interact with the wax before any product reaches our customers.
3. Selecting the Wick
The wick plays a crucial role in how a candle burns. We trial multiple wick sizes and types with each fragrance and vessel combination to ensure a clean, even burn that doesn't tunnel, doesn't smoke, and doesn't burn too fast. Getting the wick right is one of the most time-intensive parts of the candle-making process.
4. Hand-Pouring Each Candle
Once the wax is melted and the fragrance is blended in at the correct temperature, each candle is hand-poured into its vessel and left to set. Because we use pure coconut wax, the surface may appear slightly rustic or uneven when set - this is completely natural and a hallmark of pure, unadulterated coconut wax. It vanishes as soon as the candle is lit.
How to Use Eddie & Lu Products
How to Burn an Eddie & Lu Candle
For the best experience from your Eddie & Lu candle:
- Trim the wick to approximately 5mm before each burn.
- On the first burn, allow the candle to burn until the entire surface has melted into a full melt pool - this prevents tunnelling and ensures even burning throughout the life of the candle. This typically takes 2β4 hours depending on the size.
- Never burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time.
- Keep the candle away from draughts, which can cause uneven burning and soot.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended or within reach of children or pets.
- Stop burning when approximately 10mm of wax remains.
How to Use Coconut Wax Melts
Wax melts are a flameless way to fragrance your home. To use Eddie & Lu wax melts:
- Place one or two wax melt pieces into the bowl of a wax melt burner (also available from Eddie & Lu).
- Light a tea light candle beneath the bowl, or if using an electric burner, switch it on.
- The wax will gently melt and release fragrance into the room.
- Once the fragrance fades, allow the wax to cool and solidify, then pop it out and replace with fresh melts.
- Never add water to the wax melt bowl.
Coconut wax melts are ideal for rooms where you prefer not to use an open flame, or where you want longer-lasting fragrance across a larger space.
How to Use Eddie & Lu Room Spray
Our fragrant room spray is designed to instantly refresh any space. Simply hold the bottle 30β40cm from soft furnishings, linens, or into the air and spray 2β3 times. The fragrance is formulated to linger without being overpowering. Room sprays are also perfect for refreshing wardrobes, linen cupboards, and cars.
How to Use Eddie & Lu Car Diffusers
Eddie & Lu car diffusers are designed to keep your vehicle smelling fresh without artificial or synthetic fragrance. To use:
- Remove the diffuser from its packaging.
- Hang or position the diffuser in your vehicle as directed on the packaging.
- The fragrance will naturally diffuse over time - adjusting the number of reeds or the positioning can affect the intensity.
How to Use Eddie & Lu Natural Hand & Body Wash
Our natural hand and body wash is formulated with pure botanicals and plant-derived ingredients. Use as you would any hand or body wash - apply a small amount to wet skin, lather, and rinse. The formula is gentle enough for daily use and is cruelty-free with no animal testing.
Why Coconut Wax?
Most candles on the market are made from paraffin wax (a petroleum by-product) or soy wax. Eddie & Lu exclusively uses coconut wax for the following reasons:
- Soy-free: Coconut wax is ideal for anyone with a soy sensitivity or allergy.
- Non-toxic: Coconut wax does not release carcinogens or harmful toxins when burned, making it safer to burn indoors.
- Cleaner burn: It produces significantly less soot than paraffin wax.
- Longer burn: Coconut wax burns slower and more evenly than many alternatives, giving you more from each candle.
- Exceptional scent throw: Coconut wax holds and releases fragrance beautifully, both when cold and when burning.
- Sustainable: Coconut wax is made from a renewable, environmentally sustainable crop and is 100% GMO and pesticide free.
